League 2 Season Preview

The relegation scrap

Matt GrimesThere have been some massively exciting relegation battles over the last few years in League 2 and, with the quality once again improving in the fourth tier of English football, we’re set to be more of the same this season. With a transfer embargo and barely any money to spend anyway, Exeter are rightly one of the favourites to go down this season. To make matters worse the future of their captain Danny Coles is currently uncertain following controversy on social media and a great deal of responsibility, perhaps too much, lies on the shoulders of 18-year-old midfielder Matt Grimes. Exeter do have a number of experience players in their ranks but a few injuries or suspensions could spell out disaster for the club and it looks like it will be a season to forget.

Despite last season’s strong showing, Accrington are again one of the favourites to go down. They have a tiny budget and a waferJames Beattie thin squad but manager James Beattie has inspired an unbelievable confidence into his team which is sure to hold them in good stead as the season goes on. Despite this, if a few new players are not brought in it could be a season of struggle for Stanley. Morecambe are also a team set to struggle. On their day, Morecambe are more than a match for most teams in this league but they are extremely inconsistent and this could be the season that this comes back to haunt them. Wycombe are another team who have been cited as potential relegation contenders, despite them having a decent enough squad to stay up. Matt Ingram is another fantastic young ‘keeper at this level and their defence contains the powerful Aaron Pierre but they lack strength in other areas and with plenty of strong teams in this division, it could be another tough year for the Chairboys.

William Hill Odds – League 2 relegation
