There are still plenty of players available on free transfers for clubs still needing more depth. Here are five who League One clubs should sign-
Russell Martin- The experienced defender left Norwich City at the end of August after eight seasons at the club. He spent the latter half of last season on loan in the Scottish Premier League with Rangers. He would be a shrewd signing for a League One side.
Kazenga Lualua- The 27-year-old would be a top player at this level. Lualua has had spells in the past at Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion, QPR and Sunderland and is still available now for clubs needing another attacking option.
Darren Bent- He was released by Derby County at the end of last season and could still do a job up front in League One. Bent, who made 13 caps for England in his career, spent last season on loan in the Championship with Burton Albion.
David Cotterill- The 30-year-old winger has played for the likes of Bristol City, Wigan Athletic, Sheffield United, Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers, Birmingham City and Bristol City in the past. He spent last season with Indian side ATK but left them after playing three games.
Peter Whittingham- He was part of the Blackburn Rovers side who won promotion from League One last season under Tony Mowbray. The 34-year-old has played 550 games so far in his career, with 457 of them being for Cardiff City. Whittingham is a set-piece specialist and would be a decent free signing by someone.
