There is still the chance for Championship sides to sign players on free transfers. Here are five midfielders who they could still bring in-

Peter Whittingham- He left Blackburn Rovers at the end of August and is currently looking for a new club. The 34-year-old is a good short-term option for clubs who are looking for another midfield option and depth in their squad. He has bags of experience in the Championship having racked up over 550 appearances in his career.

Diego Poyet- The son of former Sunderland and Brighton and Hove Albion boss Guy Poyet is a free agent. He has played in England before for West Ham United, Charlton Athletic and MK Dons. The 23-year-old has also had spells abroad with Godoy Cruz and Pavos recently but could return to England now.

Alexandr Sapeta- The 29-year-old left Russian Premier League side Rostov in August and is weighing up his next move. He has also played for the likes of Dynamo Moscow and Ural so far in his career and would offer Championship clubs some more bite in their midfield.

Panagiotis Kone- The Greece international was released by Udinese two weeks ago and is another option for second tier sides. He has spent the last three seasons out on loan at Fiorentina, Granada and AEK Athens and wants a new permanent home now.

Jan Kirchhoff- He spent the latter half of last season on loan with Bolton Wanderers and played a part in the Trotters’ survival under Phil Parkinson. The German midfielder is now a free agent and would do a job in the Championship again.
