Who is the former Torino defender heavily linked with Crawley Town post?

Former Torino defender Gabriele Cioffi is the latest name to be linked to the managerial vacancy at Sky Bet League Two club Crawley Town according to reports by the Crawley Observer.

The 42-year-old Florence-born former centre-back is currently the red hot favourite to replace former Red Devils boss Harry Kewell who recently left the club to take up the managerial vacancy at Crawley Town’s league rivals Notts County.

The Crawley Town board are thought to be keen on appointing a new head coach before the trip to Lincoln City at the weekend with Cioffi possibly the man to take the reins at the Checkatrade.com Stadium. Many fans will have been left wondering just who is Gabriele Cioffi?

As a player, Cioffi was something of a football journeyman in his native Italy, representing no less than 11 different clubs during his 18-year career as a tough-tackling defender. Cioffi started out at Sestese, who now play in the fourth tier, before floating around the lower divisions of the Italian game with the likes of Spezia, Arezzo, Novara and Mantova.

The most famous club for which Cioffi represented was Torino but the player made just a handful of appearances for ‘The Bull’ in a one-year stay at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Since hanging up his boots in 2010, Cioffi spent time assisting fellow countryman Gianfranco Zola during a disastrous spell at Birmingham City and he could be set to return to the English game with Crawley Town.
