Sunderland considering sacking duo after not turning up to training in months

Sunderland duo Papy Djilobodji and Didier Ndong are facing the sack after not turning up to training for a number of weeks, according to Sky Sports.

Djilobodji eventually returned to Sunderland training 72 days late, but Ndong has yet to appear at the club since the end of last season when they were relegated to League One from the Championship. The club may now have no choice but to sack the duo, leaving them free to join other clubs outside of the transfer window.

German side Hannover were linked with a move for centre-back Djilobodji, and there was rumoured interest from teams in Turkey and France amongst others, but nothing came to fruition before both the deadline to sign players on permanent deals, and the loan window deadline.

It was reported that Sunderland were ready to sell him for £1 million, which would see the Black Cats significantly cut their losses, having signed the Senegalese international from Chelsea for £8 million two years ago in 2016.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross has had his opinion on the matter, stating: “I haven’t had any interest in them because they’ve never turned up and haven’t been part of what I’ve tried to build here. I don’t ever envisage them being part of that.”

The chief executive Charlie Methven said the club are “considering legal action” and the “two cases are not identical”.

Although both players may be free to join other clubs, it is unclear whether the sides linked to Djilobodji and Ndong remain keen after this incident.
