Former-Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest midfielder joins Blackburn Rovers coaching staff

Blackburn Rovers have announced via their official website that ex-player, turned pundit, George Boateng has joined their coaching staff as the head of the under-13’s side.

George Boateng plied his trade in both the Premier League and the Championship with sides such as Aston Villa, Hull City and Nottingham Forest, and enjoyed the most successful spell of his career at Middlesbrough, with the Dutchman part of the Boro side to lift the Carling Cup in 2004, and to reach the UEFA Cup final two years later.

He went on to play for the Netherlands national side four times between 2001 and 2006, while he was playing for Villa and Middlesbrough.

The step into coaching will be his first, and has joined Blackburn Rovers’ staff, where he will be managing the under-13’s side. Upon arriving at the club, he gave a question and answer session with the clubs website.

He said, “I’m absolutely delighted to be taking on this new role. It’s a great environment here at Rovers to start my coaching career in England. The philosophy and style of football here is what I believe in, so that made my decision quite an easy one.”

“After completing my UEFA Pro License and doing a lot of club visits in Holland and England at the likes of Feyenoord, Ajax and Derby, it was time for me to get involved in coaching on a daily basis. Once this opportunity came up, I thought it would be perfect for me.

He continues, “I think I fit in with the club and the other coaches. I met Tony Carss [Head of Academy Coaching] and he was really friendly and open; there were a lot of similarities with how the coaches work here and the way I see football.”
