Stoke U21s to field experienced duo in Checkatrade Trophy tie at Sunderland

The Stoke Sentinel is of the understanding that the Stoke City Under-21 side should include first team players Moritz Bauer and Charlie Adam in their starting eleven for tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy clash against Sunderland. The pair have struggled for game time under Gary Rowett in recent times.

There have been rule changes implemented by the EFL for this competition which directly affect those invited Under-21 sides from the Premier League and Sky Bet Championship. Stoke will be breaking no rules if they field Bauer and Adam, unless other experienced professionals are involved.

One rule change is that Under-21 clubs can only field two players over the age of 21, and that have made over 40 or more senior appearances. 26-year-old Bauer started the new season in the team, but the popular full back has been relegated to the bench in recent weeks. 32-year-old Adam also appeared in this competition last season when Stoke were invited as a Premier League club. He has only one first-team appearance this season, coming in the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup. Both were not involved in Stoke’s weekend loss at West Brom.

Other rule changes in the competition see the end of the ‘ABBA’ penalty shoot out format and the fact clubs in the EFL are able to field players who have been sent out on loan to clubs in the National League and below.

Lincoln City are the holders of the competition after defeating Shrewsbury Town at Wembley Stadium thanks to an Elliott Whitehouse strike. 16 groups of four begin the road to Wembley once more, tonight.
