The Sun understands that free agent central defender John Terry is wanted by former club Aston Villa. The then bad financial situation at Villa Park meant they were unable to keep him as last season ended, but Steve Bruce is hoping to persuade the new owners to sanction a move for the former England & Chelsea captain.
Terry himself has stirred the pot somewhat even more, as he appears to have voted ‘Yes’ on a social media vote, of which the question was ‘Would John Terry come back if he was asked to?’. Tommy Elphick was allowed to leave for Hull City on loan, which means there is a need for another centre back at the club. James Chester remains on the books and is being partnered by Mile Jedinak, who by trade is more of a central midfielder. Micah Richards remains out of favour.
Six games into the Sky Bet Championship season and it has been a mixed start by the club. The 4-1 loss to Sheffield United at the weekend has seemingly alarmed Bruce into needed to reinforce his defensive options. Terry was a rock at the heart of the back four last season, and if the player himself is supposedly up for coming back then it may be a move to suit all concerned. Of course Terry is not a long-term option in this area, but his experience could be vital to getting their season back on track.
Bruce failed with late attempts to sign Scott McKenna and Harold Moukoudi from Aberdeen and Le Havre respectively prior to the transfer deadline.
