Barnsley, PREVIEW: Barnsley v Gillingham

PREVIEW: Barnsley v Gillingham

Barnsley will be looking to keep up the heat on Sky Bet League One leaders Peterborough United when they face Gillingham at Oakwell this afternoon.

The Tykes have enjoyed a good run of form during the opening month of the season and an unbeaten sequence has left them in fifth position after five matches.

Daniel Stendel’s men have won three and drawn two of their league matches while only league leaders Peterborough United have netted more goals than their impressive return of 12.

Barnsley go into their latest match against Gillingham with several injury concerns. Midfielders Lloyd Isgrove and Ryan Hedges have been ruled out through injury while Guadeloupean international defender Dmitri Cavare faces a late fitness test on a muscle strain. New signing Cauley Woodrow could feature for The Tykes.

Opponents Gillingham make the long trip north on the back of a solid start to the campaign which has seen them collect seven points. The Kent club are expected to be without midfield trio Mark Byrne, Redan Charles-Cook and Dean Parrett, although youngster Bradley Stevenson could return to the side. Former Arsenal apprentice Josh Rees may be handed his debut by Gills boss Steve Lovell.

The two sides last met at Oakwell almost three years ago. On that occasion, Barnsley were 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Ben Pearson and Sam Winnall. The South Yorkshire club will be the hot favourites to prevail again today.
