Crawley set Notts County Kewell compensation at £400,000

The Nottingham Post claims that Notts County are engaged in talks with Sky Bet League Two rivals Harry Kewell over the Australian becoming their next manager. However, compensation could be a big stumbling block, with Crawley supposedly wanting £400,000 to allow Kewell to move to Meadow Lane.

Whilst Notts County have indeed been given permission to speak to the former Leeds United and Liverpool winger, it still appears anything but a formality that an appointment will be concluded. That being said, Notts County chairman Alan Hardy has said a new man should be in place before the weekend, although those comments came before the high asking price.

Kewell would seemingly be willing to take on the job in Nottinghamshire, and he’d want to bring his assistant Warren Feeney with him too. Crawley however are digging their heels in at this stage and will not let the 39-year-old go either cheaply, or without a fight.

He is very much Notts’ number one choice for the vacancy, but Neal Ardley of AFC Wimbledon is another that they would like to talk to. Speaking after they lost to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup, he said he had ‘no idea’ of any talk of him replacing the now departed Kevin Nolan.

Gary Bowyer, the former Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool manager, has also been linked to the job, but it is understood he is not looking to take on a job at this stage.

Notts County entertain Forest Green Rovers this weekend, whilst Crawley travel to Oldham Athletic. Which dugout will Kewell be in, only time will tell.
