Five potential candidates for the Cheltenham Town job

League Two side Cheltenham Town have parted company with Gary Johnson, as confirmed by their official club website. Here are five potential candidates to replace him-

Russell Milton- He has been placed in temporary charge for the “foreseeable future”, according to their club statement. The 49-year-old was Johnson’s assistant and has been in caretaker before for Cheltenham in 2015. Milton also spent six seasons as a player for them.

Lee Carsley- The former Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, Everton, Coventry City and Birmingham City midfielder is available. Since retiring from playing in 2011, he has worked in various coaching/managerial roles at Coventry, Sheffield United, Brentford, Manchester City, Birmingham and England Under-21’s.

Steve Cotterill- He is a Cheltenham Town legend already and guided them to three promotions from the Southern Football League Premier Division to the Second Division (Now National League South to League One) as well as the FA Trophy in his first spell at the club. Cotterill is now out-of-work, could he make a sensational return to where he made his name?

Jack Lester- The 42-year-old got his first taste of management last season but could not prevent Chesterfield from relegation to the National League. He has also worked in coaching roles at Notts County and Nottingham Forest since retiring from playing. Lester is another option for Cheltenham.

Gary Bowyer- He has recently left League One side Blackpool after over two years in charge. He guided them to promotion from League Two in 2017 and did a very impressive job with the Seasiders under difficult circumstances. Cheltenham could offer him a quick route back into the game.
