Two horse race for Tottenham defender as Championship clubs fight for starlet’s signature

Swansea City have entered a race to sign Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, according to respected journalist Alan Nixon.

The recently relegated side fell to into the Sky Bet Championship with a leaky defence, conceding 56 goals in the League.

So it’s understandable why Graham Potter would be keen to improve his side’s defensive options.

However, Potter will have to fight for Carter-Vickers’ signature. The Spurs defender spent last season on-loan at Ipswich Town and the Blues are keen to bring him to Portman Road again.

The 20-year-old has failed to make an appearance for the Spurs first-team, but impressed during two spells on-loan last term. Carter-Vickers began the season at Sheffield United before switching to Ipswich Town in the January transfer window.

Having impressed under Mick McCarthy at Ipswich, new Blues boss Paul Hurst is keen to bring Carter-Vickers back to Suffolk.

After making fourteen appearances on-loan at Ipswich in the previous campaign, a move to Portman Road could be the preferred choice for Carter-Vickers.

After missing out on defender Curtis Tilt last month, Hurst declared that Town would look at the loan market for potential signings – ear-marking central defence as one position he is looking to improve.

“I still think we will probably have to look at the loan market for one or two more between now and September.” he said to the East Anglian Daily Times.

“Centre back is an obvious position. Luke Woolfenden has gone for a scan and could be out for six weeks.

“Realistically we are back to the position we were in with two recognised centre-backs and ones who can fill in. It’s not ideal and we’d certainly prefer a more specialist person to create competition for Luke (Chambers) and Toto (Nsiala).”
