Why some of Leeds’ biggest names need to be “at it” tonight for Bielsa

Leeds United are about to enter the midweek fixtures schedule for the 2018/19 campaign tonight. It represents a cup fixture for the club the chance for fans to soak up another home game and some of the bigger names at the club to finally impress.

Pontus Jansson is set to make his first appearance under Marcelo Bielsa, something that Leeds United fans and pundits wouldn’t haven’t expected a few weeks ago, a player who was seemingly nailed on to play in this side. Jansson will break into this side at some stage, Gaetano Berardi and Liam Cooper probably know this, but for the time being he’ll have to impress in the first round of the League Cup.

Jansson returned late from his summer due to a good World Cup for Sweden but that’s meant he’s struggling to get into the Leeds side come League duty. Gaetano Berardi and Liam Cooper were solid throughout pre-season but it’s fair to say since the start of the season they have been playing at their best in Leeds shirts, absorbing the Marcelo Bielsa way so far and meaning a place on the bench for Jansson is as good as it’s got.

At £7 million Patrick Bamford is another who wouldn’t have expected to have been sat on the bench for the first couple of weeks but such is the form of Kemar Roofe that’s where he’ll stay come Saturday most probably. If Roofe keeps his current form up Bamford may have to start making sure he takes his chances as and when they come. Tonight is one of those and he’ll want to make sure he sticks in both the coaches, and the fans minds.

Lewis Baker, Jack Harrison and Jamal Blackman have all arrived from two of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. Anyone arriving from Manchester City or Chelsea will be expecting game time at Leeds United but for from the current players mean that’s been non-existent and very slim between the three of them. All will be looking to make an impact tonight and make sure that Marcelo Bielsa knows they are ready to go.

Bolton are probably expecting a weak Leeds side, not realising that the situation means they will come up against some of the biggest names currently at the club. It certainly makes for an interesting game.
