Graham Potter gives verdict on Oli McBurnie after starting in first two Swansea City matches of season

Swansea City head coach Graham Potter has told The Independent that Oli McBurnie epitomizes all the club is about.

McBurnie has spent most of his career being loaned out from Swansea but has been given a chance in the first team following their relegation from the Premier League. He scored in their season opener to seal the Swans 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield United but things did not go as well this weekend. Despite having a penalty in Saturday’s match against Preston North End, his spot kick was saved. Luckily, they won 1-0 despite that.

But even though McBurnie wasn’t able to get on the score sheet on Saturday, Potter was full of praise for him. He has said that the striker’s work ethic is what the club is about and that he has enjoyed working with him ever since he became the manager this summer. Potter also thanked the fans for responding positive to McBurnie even when he missed that spot kick.

He said: “He’s probably epitomised what we’re trying to do,”

“He stepped up [to miss a penalty] and it happens in football, you miss penalties, but I think his response was brilliant. I thought the crowd’s response to him was equally brilliant – I thank them for that.”

“He’s been a pleasure to work with, and I think he’s going to be part of what we’re doing here going forward, because his interpersonal qualities are really important.”

McBurnie could play in Friday night’s Sky Bet Championship match against Birmingham City.
