Aston Villa fans react as they beat Wigan Athletic with dramatic late winner

Aston Villa fans were delighted to beat Wigan Athletic 3-2 after they scored a dramatic late winner.

The Villains had a bright start last week as they were able to come from behind to beat Hull City 3-1 in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Monday night. But Wigan also had a bright start, beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 last weekend to get their return to the Sky Bet Championship off to a good start.

To begin with, everything went as expected for Aston Villa. They took the lead early on when James Chester headed in a free kick from John McGinn, the latter already impressing after signing on Deadline Day. But Wigan would rally and got an equaliser just before the end of the first half through Nick Powell.

In the second half, it was Wigan who got off to the better start. One of their own deadline day signings was able to impress when Callum Connolly scored as he headed in a Powell cross. But this was when Villa showed some metal and came back. Firstly, Wigan were not able to deal with a scramble in the box and Chey Dunkley ended up putting the ball into his own net. And as the clock ticked down, Villa grabbed a dramatic winner when Birkir Bjarnason, fresh off the World Cup, was able to slide in and score in the 94th minute.

As you can imagine, Villa fans were delighted to get a win in such a dramatic win. But some did admit there were flaws in the way they played which forced them to need a last minute winner.
