Wigan Athletic complete £1 million deal for Championship striker

Wigan Athletic have announced the signing on Joe Garner from Ipswich Town on their Twitter account.

The Latics are also expected to announce a deal for Sheffield United midfielder Lee Evans as well. They have had a busy transfer deadline day and have signed Josh Windass from Rangers as well selling Dan Burn to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Joe Garner is an experienced striker at Championship level and will be a shrewd acquisition for Paul Cook’s side. They have seen off interest from Bolton Wanderers to land him.

The 30-year-old only joined the Tractor Boys last summer from Rangers for around £1 million but could now leave them after just a season. Garner managed 10 goals in the Championship in the last campaign.

Joe Garner started his career at Blackburn Rovers but never broke into the first-team at Ewood Park. He joined Carlisle United on loan in 2007 and was later signed by them on a permanent basis. He bagged 14 goals for them in the 2007/08 season in League One and this earned him a move to Championship side Nottingham Forest.

The 5ft 10inc striker then went onto have spells in the second tier with Huddersfield Town, Scunthorpe United and Watford before joining Preston North End in January 2013. Garner was a fans’ favourite and Deepdale and scored 51 goals for them in 151 appearances.

He moved to Scottish Premier League giants Rangers in August 2016 for a fee of £1.8 million and spent a single season playing for them. After scoring 10 goals for the Ibrox club in all competitions, he moved back to England to join Ipswich and is now set for a new challenge in his career with Wigan.
