World Cup star to leave Aston Villa

Bjarnason, who was one of three Villa players to play a part at the 2018 Russia World Cup, did not play a huge role in the 17/18 season for Villa, where they nearly clinched promotion getting to the play-off final. Steve Bruce had opted for a partnership of Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan in central midfield for the most part of the season, which saw Bjarnason start just 11 matches.

Despite the player saying he is happy at the club (Birmingham Live), a move away from Aston Villa may be smart for him to progress with his career, with just a substitute appearance during Villa’s victory against Hull on Monday night, the midfielder has become frustrated with the lack of game time he is getting.

The central midfielder is no stranger to Italian football, with previous spells at both Pescara and Sampdoria before moving to Swiss team FC Basel in 2015, therefore a move back to Italy could be a smart move for the 30-year-old who hopes to get more minutes on the pitch.
