Plymouth Argyle defender Ryan Edwards scored on his return to football after beating testicular cancer. This is a remarkable story and Ryan Edwards has become a hero to many.

Ryan Edwards told Plymouth Live: “I think you could see my emotions when I got back to my position (after his goal) and gave the fans a clenched fist.”

“They have been with me the whole way. I’m glad they had something to shout about but unfortunately we couldn’t keep hold of the points for them.”

“At the time it was a great feeling (to score) and a nice welcome back.”

“But, as far as I’m concerned, it stands for nothing now. What’s on my mind is the loss, not the goal.”

“I would have very gladly not scored today and taken the points, of course I would have.”

“This is football. We have lost our first game of 46 of a long season. Hopefully, we will get more wins than losses.”

Walsall began the game well and Josh Ginnelly sprinted 70 yards to put in Morgan Ferrier after two minutes but he was denied by debutant Plymouth Argyle keeper Matt Macey.

Plymouth Argyle grew into the game and managed to take the lead in the 40th minute when Ryan Edwards steered home Conor Grant’s far-post free-kick.

Walsall equalised five minutes later as Joe Riley brought down Ferrier in the box and Cook missed the penalty, but made no mistake from the rebound.

Walsall defender Jack Fitzwater looped an early second-half header onto the bar before Leahy’s fine 25-yard free-kick won the game for Walsall.
