Liverpool goalkeeper exits for League Two loan move

Sky Bet League Two side Tranmere Rovers have swooped to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Shamal George on loan. He will make the move to Prenton Park until January 2019 after impressing in a recent pre-season friendly game with Fleetwood Town.

Although Tranmere suffered a 2-0 loss to Joey Barton’s side at the weekend, it was a 45-minute display by Liverpool youngster George that impressed Mellon enough to offer him a loan deal. The 20-year-old will now battle it out with Scott Davies for the goalkeeping jersey in the coming months.

George has been on the books at Anfield since 2009, and although he is yet to appear in a competitive first-team match, he did travel for their 2016 tour of the USA in pre-season. Mellon is pleased to get him on board,

“We are delighted to bring Shamal into the group on loan.”

“From the 45 minutes that he played on Saturday you could see his ability as a goalkeeper and the confidence that he has.”

“We are looking forward to seeing more of what he has to offer and helping him grow as player here at Tranmere.”

The goalie had a similar spell at Carlisle United last year, with whom he made four appearances for in the first part of the campaign, before returning to Liverpool in January. Perhaps the most bizarre moment of his career indeed came during their 2016 pre-season schedule for his parent club, when appearing as an outfield player versus Huddersfield Town. He’ll be looking to make an impact at Tranmere, in between the sticks of course!
