Swansea striker Oli Mcburnie needs to prove his Premier League potential

Young Scottish striker Oli McBurnie is back at Swansea after being loaned out for the second half of last season, and the upcoming campaign could be huge for him.

The 22-year-old forward signed for Swansea in the summer of 2015 as a 19-year-old from Bradford for around £300,000, and has found himself loaned out on several separate occasions. Few turned out to be as successful as last season’s half-year stint with Barnsley, his first taste of Championship football – the striker scored 9 goals in 17 games (while often playing on the left wing) but couldn’t quite manage to steer the Tykes from relegation back into League One.

McBurnie’s confidence will be high going into the new season, as he’ll be one of the only strikers the Swans have at their disposal who brings any sort of form into the new campaign from last season. New Swansea manager Graham Potter still has the likes of Wilfired Bony and the Ayew brothers to choose from, but with all three of those players failing to impress last season and none of them getting any younger, one might expect that Potter may implement a youthful approach to the south coast of Wales (which has been backed up by the £2m signing of 19-year-old Joel Asoro from Sunderland), which will definitely play into the hands of Oli McBurnie.

The Swansea forward also broke into the Scotland senior side off the back of his great form with Barnsley, and having the chance to showcase his talent with a bigger club that Swansea are, and this time attempting to fire his side to promotion back to the Premier League rather than trying to save a team from relegation will show a different challenge to what he is used to, but one that Swansea fans will be hopeful of him completing.
