Mystery Walsall trialist could be former-Middlesbrough and Liverpool defender

Walsall were defeated 4-1 last night by Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly, with two trialists making appearances in the game.

Many Walsall fans have speculated as to who the trialists were, with former-Middlesbrough and Liverpool youngster Tom Brewitt a name cropping up on social media.

The trialist partnered Jon Guthrie in the centre of defence in the game, and he looked composed and assured on the ball and strong in the tackle. Although the scoreline didn’t help his chances of signing for the club, Brewitt certainly showed manager Dean Keates what he is capable of.

Brewitt left Liverpool’s youth system to sign for Middlesbrough on a free transfer just last year, but was released after not signing a professional contract with the club. Both Brewitt and the club reportedly came to a mutual agreement to allow the player to find another club. He could now join Walsall if he has impressed in his first trial game against Villa this week.

The centre-back is still only 21 years of age and has his whole career ahead of him. After moving from Liverpool to Middlesbrough, he went on to captain the Teessider’s Under-23 side last season. He has also represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level, and a club like Walsall could be the perfect place to get first-team football.

The decision to allow the youngster to leave Middlesbrough was a controversial one amongst fans. Many Boro supporters were split on Brewitt, with some believing there was better quality defenders in the youth system, and others feeling it was premature to let the Under-23 captain leave the club.
