West Ham leading Wolves in the race for Swansea City defender

Premier League sides West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are battling it out to sign Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, with the Hammers currently leading the race for the 24-year-old.

Popular bookmakers Sky Bet have given West Ham odds of 8/13 to sign the former Barnsley central defender, with 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship winners Wolves narrowly behind at 7/2.

Mawson is expected to leave the club this summer following the Swans’ relegation from the Premier League last season.

Despite suffering relegation Mawson impressed with the Welsh side last season, and his performances earned him a call-up to the England squad for the friendlies with the Netherlands and Italy back in March 2018.

Unfortunately for Mawson, he did not get to make his senior debut, but just being involved with the squad will have given him a taste of what it is like, and he will know he need to return to the top flight in order to enhance his chances of becoming a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Mawson signed for Swansea City back in 2016, despite having played just four games for Barnsley in the Sky Bet Championship.

The season prior to his move he had helped Barnsley achieve promotion from Sky Bet League One, leading them to the Play-Off final where they beat Millwall 3-1.

Mawson started his career in the youth set-up at Reading before switching to West London side Brentford. He failed to make the cut at Brentford, and instead spent time out on loan at Maidenhead United, Luton Town, Welling United and Wycombe Wanderers.
