McGoldrick, Experienced Championship striker set for Sheffield United trial

Experienced Championship striker set for Sheffield United trial

Sheffield United are set to hand a trial to former Ipswich Town striker David McGoldrick, according to the Sheffield Star. The 30-year-old, who left Portman Road at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract, is set to feature in a pre-season friendly game for the Blades this week.

It is anticipated that Sheffield United fans will get the chance to see the Republic of Ireland international striker in action in their encounter with Bradford City tomorrow evening. McGoldrick has been invited by Chris Wilder, who himself will determine if he is worthy of being offered a deal at Bramall Lane.

It is evidently clear that Wilder is looking to add another striker to his roster before their Sky Bet Championship campaign gets under way at the start of next month. Scott Hogan of Aston Villa is someone who interests him, but Villa will not entertain a loan deal; only a straight sale. This has put Sheff Utd off. Attentions have turned to McGoldrick, who played well over 100 times for Ipswich after turning his loan spell into a full time one in 2013. Last season he netted eight goals, in what was an injury hit season, meaning he averaged one goal in every three appearances he made.

Sam Gallagher of Southampton is rumoured to be another target for the Sheffield club as well. With Ched Evans likely to depart on loan, possibly to Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town, it further increases the need to add more firepower in the attacking third.
