Another week starts and clubs in the Football League are running out of time. Business has been slow, slower than usual and only a handful have made headline signings. Leeds United are a club struggling, just one deal over the line to date and now less than three weeks before a meeting with Stoke City.
Phil Hay has briefed the Leeds United army this morning, with Chelsea keeper Jamal Blackman set to be announced today and play some part tomorrow at Forest Green the tally stands at…or will stand at an unconvincing two. Lewis Baker has already arrived but Phil Hay says the fans should be expecting “four or five” new additions before the end of the window, not including the two previously mentioned. Seven signings overall, plus a few extra already on the books would make sense.
Tyler Roberts and Yosuke Ideguchi are both training with the first-team, both haven’t kicked a ball for the club yet. Roberts arrived in January, injured and on return picked up a serious shin injury meaning no debut for him yet. Ideguchi was loaned to Cultural Leonesa in a bizarre deal which cost him his place in the World Cup squad and a waste of four months. He was training with the under 23’s but has now been boosted into the first-team by an impressed Marcelo Bielsa.
Three under 23’s have also made the step-up to the first-team since Bielsa arrived. Striker Ryan Edmondson and wingers Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke look set to get some football in pre-season, the trio will almost certainly be involved in some capacity tomorrow simply because options are so limited. Leeds have just one centre-back available tomorrow, Liam Cooper and he will probably be paired with Luke Ayling or Gaetano Berardi. Four or five would certainly help the situation, the sooner the better.
