We’re well into a very exciting transfer window now and the new season is nearly upon us. Who are the favourites to win promotion to the Championship this season?

Last season in League One, Wigan Athletic went up as Champions, Blackburn Rovers as runners up and Rotherham United as play-off winners. But what were their odds at this point last year?

Champions Wigan Athletic were third favourites at 3/1 last season. Runners up Blackburn were the outright favourites at 5/2. Finally, the play-off winners, Rotherham United were way out at a massive 14/1.

This season, Sunderland are massive favourites at 1/1. This may come as a surprise to some fans out there given the free fall the club have been on in recent years. They seem to have sorted their issues out during the closed season by releasing several players, finding a new manager and finding a new owner. It’s too early to say for certain but things seem to be on the up for the Black Cats.

The second favourites are currently Barnsley at odds of 5/2. The Tykes were relegated alongside Sunderland. Barnsley have managed to hold on to most of their key assets following relegation from the Championship which is what’s giving them so short odds. Many fans will be expecting Barnsley to walk the league given the quality of their squad.

Finally, the third favourites are both Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth with odds of 10/3. Both of these sides were pushing for the play-offs and Charlton managed to sneak into them, finishing in 6th place. They’re both looking to improve their squads this summer and will undoubtedly be massive threats this upcoming season.
