Former Blackburn and West Ham defender on trial at Charlton Athletic

Former Blackburn Rovers and West Ham defender Elliot Ward is currently on trial with Charlton Athletic, according to the South London Press.

He will play for the Addicks in their game against Welling United today in the hope of impressing manager Lee Bowyer and earning a permanent contract at The Valley.

Ward is now a free agent after being released by Championship bound Blackburn Rovers.

The defender spent the second half of last season on loan at MK Dons, but he couldn’t help them prolong their status in League One.

He joins Simon Dawkins as the second trialist in the Charlton squad, as the Addicks look to bolster their side and try to mount another promotion push.

The 33 year old is highly experienced in the Football League and will provide some much needed squad depth in the Charlton back line, especially after the departure of Ezri Konsa.

Ward began his career at West Ham, but he managed only 15 appearances for the Hammers.

He joined Coventry City for £1m in 2006 and spent four years with the Sky Blues, making 116 appearances at the Ricoh Arena.

After his contract with Coventry came to an end, Ward joined Norwich City and was instrumental part of the squad that helped the Canaries win promotion to the Premier League.

He has spent the majority of his career in the second tier, and the Championship experience could be beneficial to Bowyer next season.

Despite coming to the latter stages of his career, Ward would be a smart signing for Charlton and would provide good competition for a starting spot.
