Aston Villa to rival Sheffield United for Premier League striker

Aston Villa want to sign Southampton striker Sam Gallagher on loan, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Villa are looking to bolster their squad ahead of next season but will have to do it on a restricted budget due to financial implications of failing to gain promotion in the last campaign. Therefore, Steve Bruce is looking to delve into the loan market for signings.

The Midlands club are keen to re-sign Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe on loan for next season again but are now looking to strike a deal with Southampton for striker Sam Gallagher.

The 22-year-old has been the subject of interest from Championship side Sheffield United so far in this transfer window. The Blades will now have to see off interest from Aston Villa if they are to land Gallagher this summer.

Gallagher joined Southampton’s academy in 2012 having previously been at Plymouth Argyle as a youngster. He rose through the youth ranks at St Mary’s and has gone onto play 20 games for their first-team to date.

He has gained plenty of first-team experience during loan spells at MK Dons, Blackburn Rovers and most recently Birmingham City. Gallagher has scored a combined 21 goals in the Championship during these stints.

Aston Villa need to bring in some players to lift the doom and gloom surrounding Villa Park at the moment and Sam Gallagher would be a decent loan signing for them. He has scored goals in the Championship before and would provide them with more depth in the attacking position.
