Middlesbrough looking to sign West Brom’s international winger

Middlesbrough are interested in signing West Bromwich Albion and Scotland winger Matt Phillips according to the Birmingham Mail.

Phillips was one of the standout players for the Baggies in what was an awful 2017/18 campaign that ended with their relegation back to the Sky Bet Championship.

His pace and power always made him look a threat, and despite the fact that come the end of the season he only had two goals and two assists to his name, he may have done enough to earn a move away.

He had originally been expected to leave the Midlands club and join a Premier League outfit, with recently promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers reported to be interest in the Scottish international, however those rumours appear to have died down, and now it seems he will remain in the second tier.

Matt Phillips currently has two years remaining on his contract at the Hawthorns, meaning he may cost Middlesbrough a substantial amount of money.

Tony Pulis is currently trying to build a squad capable of improving on last season’s fifth place finish in the Sky Bet Championship table. Boro’ reached the Play-Off Semi-Finals, but they were beaten over two legs by Aston Villa.

The news that Pulis is extremely keen on signing Phillips could worry Middlesbrough fans, as it could be a subtle indication that star winger Adama Traore could be on his way out of the club.

The Spaniard has been linked with a move away from the North East for a number of weeks now, with Premier League sides Chelsea and Huddersfield Town both said to be interest in him.
