5 of the fiercest rivalries in the Football League

AFC Wimbledon vs MK Dons

MK Dons v Colchester United - npower League OneA very recently formed contest the “Dons derby” came into being when Wimbledon’s hierarchy decided to address their dwindling and limited fan base by following the suit of many US sport teams and to relocate. Moving from south west London, to the large, team-less town of Milton Keynes – Buckinghamshire over 80 miles away. The move was controversial and unpopular among the majority of the Football League, none more so then the distraught Wimbledon fans who had all of a sudden lost their team.

The fans response was to start an all new club named “AFC Wimbledon” and in true fairytale fashion the new club owned and run by the fans rose through the football pyramid. In just nine seasons, they were in the Football League Two after one of the fastest assents of all time. It wasn’t until 2012 that they faced MK ‘Dons’ for the first time, in the FA cup third round. Many AFC fans planned to boycott the game, which was televised on ITV, but those who did go saw their side valiantly fall to a Jon Otsemobor goal after Jack Midson had got them level.
