What a start – Leeds youngster hits goal 19 minutes into Peterborough debut

Leeds youngster Tyler Denton made an immediate impression for Steve Evans and Peterborough on Friday night, bagging a 19th minute goal on his debut. The left-back only joined a couple of days ago and caught the eye in a comfortable pre-season win.

Denton, a player on the books of Leeds United favourite Ian Harte has a huge chance to impress on loan because he has fallen back in the pecking order at Leeds in the last year. He looked certain to be the next in line when Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was sent back to Manchester United and Vurnon Anita was injured but that wasn’t the case.

Instead Laurens De Bock arrived from Club Brugge, Stuart Dallas played a few times there and then probably the toughest of the lot Tom Pearce stepped up from the 23’s and was handed a debut. He then held that position and is in front of Denton who finished the season in great form and captaining the under 23’s.

Denton, a talented player has been on the fringes of Leeds United squad for a few years now and he really needs this loan to catch the eye if he wants to break into the side because a left-back seems to be on the agenda again this summer. He was loaned to Port Vale last season but returned to Leeds for family reasons.

The destination he was expected to head to was actually Italy not because he indicated it but because it was the only club linked and it seemed like a great chance to learn a different style of football at Brescia. The links came from the fact Massimo Cellino is at the club, the ex-Leeds owner wanted a season-long-loan with the option of a permanent.

As it is Denton is playing for one of Massimo Cellino’s ex-managers in Steve Evans. The Scottish coach came across Denton during his time at the club and the pair will now work together as Posh look for a return to the Championship after a few years out.
