If Sheffield United land star striker target then it sends huge statement

Sheffield United are looking to sign Scott Hogan from Aston Villa according to the Sheffield Star as the club look to strengthen after selling youngster David Brooks to Bournemouth for a club record fee. If the deal does come off then Sheffield United’s expectations will be greatly higher.

Until last season Scott Hogan was seen as one of the best strikers outside of the Premier League. West Ham United were desperate to sign the player from Brentford where he was becoming sought after from all over the country. They couldn’t agree a fee for the striker and Aston Villa, a club who are paying the price for overspending came in with a deal of over £10 million.

It’s fair to say it has never really got going for the Republic of Ireland international at Villa Park, and he isn’t the only big-money signing who flopped under the pressure. Ross McCormack was much more high-profile but the difference between the two is at opposite ends of the scale.

Hogan gives his all where McCormack doesn’t even turn up to training and it’s a case, regarding Hogan of him not settling at Villa Park. At Brentford he was very hard to control for opposition defenders and a move to Sheffield United may well mean he can re-discover that form and the main thing, re-discover his confidence.

The prospect of having a front three of Scott Hogan, Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke is quite frightening and would certainly raise expectations at the Blades and quite rightly so, they already have a squad of very good players but maybe the depth was the main issue last season. Chris Wilder has worked wonders since arriving at the club.
