John Sheridan says Carlisle United will feel like they have a “new signing” with midfielder

John Sheridan arriving at Carlisle United has meant expectation has increased and rightly so. The ex-Leeds United player and most recently Fleetwood Town boss is a successful coach and Carlisle have done well to lure him the north.

He has been speaking in the News and Star this week and admits that when key midfielder Jason Kennedy returns to the squad after injury it will be like a new signing for the club. Kennedy is one of those players that every Football League club needs to be successful, long-serving and experienced in different leagues, composed and a good head for the other players and especially the younger ones to be around.

When he does return he may well aim to reach his 100th appearance for the football club before the season is out. He has played well over 70 times for the club and in today’s game that is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. Sheridan is looking to the loan market in an attempt to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season but a fully fit Kennedy would go a long way to improving the team.

“I’m gutted he’s not fit and available now because he’s an excellent player, especially for this level – he’s played against my teams before,” Sheridan said.

This was a great line from the News and Star because it shows how much he thinks of Kennedy both on a footballing level but personally as well and he has now gained a reputation of being a brilliant man-manager in the Football League.

Getting Carlisle United back to League one isn’t an easy job but with Sheridan it looks more likely than it has for a couple of years. The Football league is a different beast depending on who you are and a good way to describe it when you are struggling is an abyss, football clubs can drop divisions like nobody’s business and it wasn’t that long ago Carlisle were fighting Leeds United to get into the Championship.
