Leeds United striker hunt step closer with rival interest deflected

Leeds United have been in the mix for soon-to-be free agent striker Abel Hernandez since mid-May, now news from The Sun could knock one of their biggest rivals out of the race.

One of the biggest obstacles to Leeds getting the 29-cap Uruguayan international to sign on the dotted line has always been the interest of other sides also in the chase. More recently is has been sides such as Cardiff City, Genoa and Cagliari that were said to be rivals, but before that Turkish giants Galatasaray were said to be heading up the raiding party.

Turkish site Fanatik said that Hernandez was due to join the Istanbul side, going as far as to say that a three-year deal had been offered to the South American forward, a deal that came with a salary of €2 million (£1.75 million) per year.

Now The Sun’s Adam Storer says that Galatasaray’s eyes have turned elsewhere, the Turkish side casting their eyes over Leicester City frontman Ahmed Musa. The Sun story quotes Musa’s agent William D’Avila, who was speaking to Radyospor, as confirming that a potential deal was being discussed.

D’Avila said “Yes, we are in talks with Galatasaray. They are a huge club who’ll play in the Champions League. So why not? The transfer is possible.” Musa, who the Foxes signed for £16 million in 2016, spent the latter part of last season out on loan in Russia with CSKA Moscow, his former club.

D’Avila adds that whilst a deal is not a certainty that they are working “on a loan deal with an option to buy” for Musa who is currently back in Russia with Nigeria and playing in the World Cup.

This view is also one held by TEAMtalk editor James Marshment who posted the following on his personal Twitter feed:

There is little doubt that Leeds United need a consistent threat in front of goal, a ‘threat’ that was largely sporadic last season. After losing the 27-goal threat of Chris Wood in the first few weeks of the last campaign, the onus was shifted on to players such as Kemar Roofe (11 goals) and Pierre-Michel Lasogga (10 goals).

Bringing in Hernandez, who has 28 goals in 49 Championship appearances, would be a great bit of business by Leeds United and would be a capture that would go down well with fans already bubbling that Marcelo Bielsa has signed as their new manager.

Leeds United are also said to be interested in other players, Derby’s Matej Vydra, Manchester City’s Angus Gunn and Spurs youngster Juan Foyth in those mentioned. United’s managing director Angus Kinnear has confirmed that the transfer plans of Bielsa are “well advanced” – could Hernandez be a part of that?
