An updated five potential candidates for the Macclesfield Town job

Steve Davis- The former Crewe Alexandra boss’ name has been mentioned in regards to the vacant Macclesfield job. He managed the Railwaymen for six years and guided them to promotion to League One in 2012 and the Football League Trophy in 2013. His most recent spell at Leyton Orient did not go to plan but he is keen to get back into the game.

Steve Watson- He was the initial favourite for the job when Askey left for Shrewsbury. Watson worked as Askey’s assistant at the Moss Rose before he left to take charge of Gateshead last season. He already knows the club and the players well so is an option for the full-time job for the Silkmen hierarchy.

Richie Wellens- The 38-year-old has recently been sacked by Oldham Athletic and is another who Macclesfield could go for. He had a brief playing stint with the Silkmen during the 2016/17 season so also already knows the club. He could be eager to get back into management as soon as possible and Macclesfield in League Two is an interesting proposition.
