Stoke chasing Newcastle United striker

Stoke City are keen on a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, according to a report from The Mirror.

New Potters boss Gary Rowett is also reportedly interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Benik Afobe as he looks to get the club promoted at the first time of asking.

Gayle scored 23 goals for Newcastle during the Championship campaign in the 2016/17 season, helping fire the Magpies to an instant promotion back to the top flight.

However, the former Crystal Palace man has failed to recreate that form in the Premier League, notching just six goals last season.

Stoke will be going in to the new season as big favourites for promotion and the signing of Gayle would go a long way in helping the Potters build a squad capable of finishing in the top two.

Aleksandar Mitrovic is also reportedly on his way out of St James’ Park, so the sale of Gayle would leave the Toon with just two recognised strikers in Joselu and Ayoze Perez.

Rowett has said that he is chasing players that have previously performed well in the Championship and the former Derby boss sees Gayle as the perfect fit.

No Stoke player reached double figures for goals last season, with that being a key factor in why the club suffered relegation back to the second tier for the first time since 2008.

There is set to be a mass exodus at the Bet365 Stadium this summer as Gary Rowett looks set to build his own squad in the potteries, and Dwight Gayle could be first through the door.
