Premier League side Southampton are the favourites to sign Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, according to popular bookmakers Sky Bet.
Gibson was an ever present in the ‘Boro side this season, helping them to fifth place in the Sky Bet Championship table and earning them a place in the end of season Play-Offs.
However, the North East side were beaten in the Semi-Final by Aston Villa, and look set to face the consequences this summer as they prepare to lose a number of their first team players.
Ben Gibson had originally been linked with a move away from the club last summer following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, but he decided to remain at the Riverside.
It seems his time has come to an end however, with Southampton 2/1 favourites to secure his signature following their Premier League survival.
The Saints remained in the Premier League on the final day of the season despite a 1-0 defeat at home to champions Manchester City, with a 1-0 victory at Swansea City earlier that week proving crucial.
They are now preparing their squad, looking for an improvement on last season, and Mark Hughes sees Ben Gibson as a man that can help do that.
If this transfer does go ahead, it will be excellent news for Leeds United, as it will all but end Southampton’s interest in their Swedish defender Pontus Jansson.
Jansson’s future is up in the air a bit at the moment, with Southampton being heavily linked with a move for the Swede, who is currently preparing for this summer’s World Cup.
The signing of Gibson will surely end any interest on Jansson, giving Leeds United fans even more hope that he will remain at Elland Road.
