Leeds United striker hunt – Abel Hernandez or Matej Vydra, who would be the better option?

With Leeds United now linked with Derby County striker Matej Vydra as well as Abel Hernandez the options seem much better that Celeb Ekuban and Pierre-Michel Lasogga. If Hernandez heads to Turkey Leeds are looking to do a deal for Vydra according to reliable sources and that means one question, who would be the better option?

In terms of goalscoring record you can make a strong case for both, in terms of comparing their style you simply can’t. Vydra plays in pockets, peels off and likes to get on the ball in deeper areas. He will arrive in the box late where Hernandez is more of your number 9. The Uruguay striker will run in behind and look to stay as central as he can at all times. He doesn’t really want the ball to feet, Vydra the total opposite. Hernandez has the edge in pace, in terms of linking play it’s Vydra all day long.

They would both play in the striker role if they came so it’s pointless classing Vydra as a number 10. It’s obvious we aren’t looking for a big striker, Vydra won’t play with his back to goal much he’ll want to be running off the defenders if anything, the likes of Samu Saiz and Pablo Hernandez could be threading balls into him from various areas on the park. despite him not being a hold-up player he rarely loses the ball playing as a striker.

Hernandez will run in behind all day and that probably suits the number 10 players better, the playmakers such as Hernandez and Saiz, the Uruguay striker remains the number one target with negotiations ongoing as the reports from Turkey suggest a huge deal is on the table for him out there. He would certainly cost less but clearly more money is available that what any of us had first thought.

The fact that Marcelo Bielsa has mentioned Vydra would suggest he would be happy with either, the Hernandez deal may not be a deal breaker for the Argentine head-coach but he’s obviously looking at what would happen if he ended up in Turkey. A deal certainly isn’t done for Bielsa as far as we know but it’s promising he’s been talking to the club about the potential signing of Vydra. Both options are a world away from what we currently have, either would be a huge statement signing by the club.
