Five potential candidates to replace Richie Wellens at Oldham Athletic

Oldham Athletic have sacked Richie Wellens, as confirmed by their official club website. Here are five potential candidates to replace him-

Paul Scholes- We have seen the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Joey Barton all handed their first managerial roles and Scholes could be next. The Manchester United legend has been linked with the Oldham Athletic job in the past and this could be the right time for him to step into management.

Darren Ferguson- He has recently left Doncaster Rovers and could be tempted by Oldham. The experienced boss has managed Peterborough United and Preston North End in the past and knows the Football League well. Ferguson guided Doncaster to promotion from League Two in 2017.

Keith Curle- The 54-year-old is available after leaving Carlisle United at the end of last season. He has previously managed Mansfield Town, Chester, Torquay United and Notts County as well. Curle is another decent option for the Latics.

Shefki Kuqi- He played for Oldham in his playing days and is another name they could consider. Since retiring from playing, Kuqi has gone onto manage in Finland with FC Honka, PK-35 Vantaa and most recently FC Inter Turku. He could be the man to guide Oldham back to League One.

Peter Clarke- The 36-year-old is currently a player for Oldham but is looking to get into management. He has played for the likes of Blackpool, Southend United and Huddersfield Town in his career and is being tipped as an outsider for the manager’s role.
