Pompey in no rush to complete signing of Chelsea captain

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett is not thought to be close to agreeing a deal for out of contract Chelsea midfielder Ruben Sammut according to The Portsmouth News.

The 20-year-old Maidstone-born midfield ace is the captain of Chelsea’s Development Squad but will officially become a free agent at the end of this month.

Sammut has previously been on trial with Sky Bet League One club Pompey but it has now been reported that the club have not yet agreed to offer a deal to the player as they consider more experienced transfer targets.

The youngster has come through the academy system at Stamford Bridge and has won three FA Youth Cups and two UEFA Youth League titles with The Blues. This season, Sammut made 23 appearances for the Development Squad as The Blues finished the campaign in eighth position.

Portsmouth enjoyed a successful season in the third tier which saw them finish just five points shy of the play-off positions. Manager Jackett must now add to his squad this summer in a bid to take a further step towards a return to the Sky Bet Championship.

Chelsea youngster Sammut has been with the South West Londoners for the past 14 years but is unlikely to sign a new deal with the club this summer.
