Preston to beat several clubs to signing of Ireland international striker

According to the Irish Sun, Shamrock Rovers striker Graham Burke is to sign for Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End. Burke scored his first international goal for Ireland in a friendly against the USA on Saturday.

Several clubs have been monitoring the player for a while now, and Preston look to have won this hotly-contested battle. He would become the latest Irishman to move across the sea and link up with Alex Neil’s side. Neil sees him playing an important player at Deepdale next season.

The 24-year-old was the first League of Ireland player in 40 years to net for the Ireland senior team. Martin O’Neill handed him his opportunity after impressing at club level. Peter Ridsale, a club advisor with the Lilywhites, was at Croke Park at the weekend to see the player in action. Both respective parties are now confident of getting the deal across the line in good time. The ex-Notts County front man should join well in time to link up before pre-season training commences later this month.

As mentioned, Burke is to become the latest Irishman to join the club. Andy Boyle, Daryl Horgan, Kevin O’Connor and Sean Maguire, who recently signed a contract extension, have all made the move from the League of Ireland and become Preston North End players.

Now it is a case of having to dot the i’s and cross the t’s as Neil looks to get his latest signing in the building. They are looking to build a team capable of finishing in the play-off positions after just missing out last season. The former Aston Villa youngster has netted 10 goals for Shamrock this season, to date. The Irish Independent understands that Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Blackburn Rovers had been keen on the forward.
