Stoke City favourites for ex-Premier League winger – Celtic lurking

Following reports of a rejected bid, online bookmakers Sky Bet have made The Potters big favourites to land Ireland and West Brom winger, James McClean. Cardiff City and Celtic are also in the pool of teams said to be interested in the winger.

Reports of a rejected bid from Stoke City have emerged in the past few days. The fee offered is thought to be around the region of £4m but, clearly, West Brom rates his value to be a lot higher than that. Although Stoke are big favourites at 1/4, Celtic are currently priced at 12/1 to sign the Irish international and it’s no secret that James McClean dreams of playing for the Scottish Giants. When it emerged that Celtic had decided to sign winger Derk Boerrigter over James McClean back in 2013, McClean reportedly said that it “broke his heart”. He also went on to say  “If it was up to me I’d have been a Celtic player a long time ago”.

James McClean has played for Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and West Brom while in England. Since moving over from Ireland in 2011 he has made 232 league appearances, 158 in the Premier League and 74 in the Championship. It’s fair to say whoever gets their hands on the 29-year-old will certainly have bagged themselves a quality player no matter what division he moves to.

With just a £4m starting bid and James McClean pushing for a move away, the club who do manage to sign the pacey winger will be getting a top quality player for just a slice of his value in today’s market. Keep an eye on this one Stoke and Celtic fans, it just might happen.
