Chairman says EFL star player ‘not for sale’ amid Premier League interest

Speaking on the Wise Men Say Podcast, new Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald insists that Paddy McNair is ‘not for sale’. However, he said the club would entertain his departure if he were to hand in a transfer request.

The Northern Ireland international has been the subject of huge interest from the Premier League recently, following Sunderland’s relegation into Sky Bet League One. Brighton & Hove Albion have witnessed two offers turned down for the former Manchester United youngster. McNair is someone that new Sunderland boss Jack Ross would love to build his team around.

It is believed that the second bid Brighton did sanction for McNair was just shy of £4million. This clearly signals how highly the top flight side rate the player, and also the Mackems too, as they could easily cash in on the player outright and use that to improve their squad as they look to bounce back into the Sky Bet Championship at the first attempt.

Nevertheless, Donald says McNair won’t be going, unless he forces such a move,

“I think most people within football realise Paddy McNair is likely to be the best midfielder in League One. On that business we don’t want to lose him.

“He’s got two years left on his contract and he hasn’t expressed a desire to leave at this stage.

“If he doesn’t want to leave and Jack wants him in his team, he’s going nowhere.

“That will be down to Paddy, if we get an offer that we feel is acceptable, which we won’t.

“So on that basis he’s not for sale.”
