Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently in talks over a deal that will see them sign Valencia’s highly rated defender Joao Cancelo this summer, according to reports from Sky Sports.
Sky Italy are reporting that Wolves have tabled a bid in the region of £35 million for the right sided defender, who spent the 2017/18 campaign on loan at Inter Milan.
The Italian giants did have the option to sign Cancelo on a permanent basis, but it is believed that they have passed on this opportunity.
Premier League winners Manchester City were also reported to be interested, but it appears that Wolves have made the first move, submitting an official bid for the player.
The 24-year-old narrowly missed out on the final 23 man Portugal squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia despite making the 35 man preliminary squad.
Cancelo played 26 games for Inter Milan during his loan spell, but clearly didn’t do enough to convince the San Siro club to bring him in permanently. Instead, he has returned to Spain and will sit down in the coming weeks with Valencia to discuss exactly what the future holds.
The Portuguese international first moved to Valencia on a year long loan deal back in 2014, before joining the club permanently for a fee believed to be somewhere in the region of 15 million Euros just a year later.
The right back has only featured seven times for his native Portugal but he has made quite the impact, scoring three goals. Previously, he had represented the Euro 2016 winners at every youth level, ranging from under 16 to under 21.
