Leeds United “very close” to stunning manager capture

The Paul Heckingbottom saga played out its final, lamentable strains today with Leeds United’s midday announcement that he’d been relieved of his duties.

The archetypal ‘we would like to thank…’ statement was duly issued wishing Heckingbottom all the best in his future journeys through football etcetera. Yet this was a dismissal that was always in the making and came after his position at the club was called into doubt.

He came in at a difficult time, arriving in early February to inherit a side with both fortune and confidence shot out from under them. Former head coach Thomas Christiansen paid the price for a rotten run of results, Heckingbottom didn’t fare any better.

In his just sort of four months in charge at Elland Road, the former Barnsley manager only won four of his 16 games in charge, including the last of his reign, a 2-0 Elland Road victory over a shell-shocked QPR side. His leaving was inevitable, and he’s had to sit and watch whilst name after name has been linked to his job.

The latest came last night, former Argentina and Chile manager Marcelo Bielsa linked to Elland Road by Spanish source El Correo. There has been much said about this link, with the official word coming from Elland Road only that an appointment will be made quickly and will be someone with more experience than the outgoing Heckingbottom.

However, sources in Argentina are already saying that the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa by Leeds United is nothing more than a formality.

The above tweet, from ESPN’s Fernando Carlos says that Bielsa “is very close to becoming the manager of Leeds United. There only remain details (work permit) in order to reach an agreement.”

This is then commented on by the following tweet from Peter Coates, a football writer specialising in Argentinian football:

Should this turn out to be true, should Leeds United sign up Marcelo Bielsa as their new manager/head coach, then Leeds United fans will have that reputable name that they have been craving for. I mean, let’s face it, Bielsa signing on as manager at Elland Road would seriously trump all those that have come before him during both the Cellino and Radrizzani reigns, and even going back into the GFH and Bates years.
