Aston Villa set to sell outcast for £2m

Aston Villa are set to sell Carles Gil to Deportivo la Coruna for a fee of £2m according to a report from the Express and Star.

Even the most avid Aston Villa fan might have forgotten that Gil is on their books as he has not played for the club since they were relegated from the Premier League. Instead he has been in his native Spain where he has been on loan to Deportivo la Coruna for two years. But it appears that finally, Villa will be able to get him off the books.

That is because in the last loan deal, there was a compulsory purchase clause which means that Deportivo had to buy Gil for £2m at the end of the deal. But that was in doubt over the last week. Deportivo ended up getting relegated from La Liga this season and there had been speculation that this meant that they no longer had to buy Gil at the end of his loan. But these reports have been dismissed and have confirmed that Gil will soon be heading to Spain for good.

This is great news for Aston Villa. Gil had no obvious future at the club and getting him off the books is fantastic news for them. And with the club facing financial uncertainty because of their failure to get promotion, getting rid of any players who aren’t going to be important to them going forward is great for them. So seeing Gil leave without much extra effort is brilliant news for the people at the top of the club.
