Middlesbrough want move for 34-year-old forward

Middlesbrough are interested in signing Burnley forward Jonathan Walters, according to the Yorkshire Post.

The 34-year-old is set to leave Burnley this summer after playing just five games for them this season. He could return to the Championship over the coming months with Middlesbrough keen.

Boro boss Tony Pulis knows Walters well from managing him at Stoke City. His side missed on promotion this season after losing to Aston Villa over two legs in the Play-Off semi-finals. He is now looking to prepare a squad for another promotion push for next season.

Pulis wants to bring Walters to the Riverside to bolster his attacking options. He would also add some more experience to Middlesbrough’s ranks.

Walters, who has made 51 caps for the Republic of Ireland, started his career at Blackburn Rovers before spells at Bolton Wanderers, Hull City and Wrexham. He moved to Chester City in 2006 and impressed for them in League Two and earned a move to Ipswich Town in the Championship.

He spent five seasons at Ipswich Town in the second tier and scored 32 goals in 146 games. Pulis then snapped him up for £2.75 million for Stoke in the Premier League in 2010. He turned out to be a big player for the Potters and spent seven years playing for them in the top flight.

Walters’ move to Burnley did not work out but Middlesbrough would be a good opportunity for him to get more regular first-team action.
