Top 50 Players of the EFL – 8th: Sol Bamba (Cardiff City)

Cardiff City defender Sol Bamba has been voted by you as the 8th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Bamba is the 8th best player in the Football League. This is the first time he has been on the Top 50 Players countdown.

It’s always great to see a reputation of a player completely change over a year and a half. Bamba was once thought of as a solid but perhaps error-prone defender. He was not seen as a great player and someone who could do a job if called upon but not much more. That’s why he was a free agent after the transfer window had ended in 2016 and how Neil Warnock was able to sign him as soon as he was appointed as the Bluebirds head coach.

Over this time with Warnock and Cardiff, Bamba has turned himself from that solid defender into one of the best in the Sky Bet Championship. He has been rock solid in the Bluebirds defence and one of the many reasons why it was so tough to break down and beat Cardiff this season. He made 46 appearances this season and while most of them he was leading the defence, he was also able to contribute at the other end with four goals and an assist.

Next year Bamba will get a chance in the Premier League following Cardiff’s promotion.
