Dean Keates speaks out about transfer targets

Walsall’s Dean Keates has a list of transfer targets ready ahead of the transfer window.

The club’s boss has to work with what is one of the lowest budgets in the league – meaning that he has to sign cheap players he believes can help the squad.

Walsall had a rather disappointing League 1 campaign in 2017/18 season, finishing in 19th place. However, with a full summer of signings, they will hope that Dean Keates can help push the club up the table next season.

Keates has spoken to a number of players already about potential moves but he has admitted that he has to have a multitude of targets in each position rather than just focusing on a few players due to his budget.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Keates said: “We are what we are – we’re not going to be the biggest payers.

“I can’t get a player in and say you’re going to earn a king’s salary. It’s a case of me highlighting players – but not just one player and putting all my eggs in one basket.

“I’ll be identifying two, three, maybe even four players for that one position.”

One player the club has been linked with so far this summer is Zeli Ismail.

The winger played on loan for the club in the 2017/18 campaign before going back to his parent club Bury. However, the club have been relegated to League 2 and have let go of Ismail – meaning that the player is available on a free transfer.

During the player’s time at Walsall, he clearly impressed the staff, as Dean Keates says he is an admirer of the player.

However, he has yet to table an official bid for the 24-year old wideman.
