Top 50 Players of the EFL – 49th: Nathan Byrne (Wigan Athletic)

Wigan Athletic wing-back Nathan Byrne has been voted by you as the 49th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Byrne is the 49th best player in the Football League. This is his first time on the Top 50 Players countdown.
For a while, things weren’t going well for Byrne. He joined Wigan back in 2016 and even though the team were struggling he struggled to make much of a break through. He even spent the second half of that season on loan with Charlton Athletic so he could at least get some time on the pitch. Worst still while he was in South London, Wigan were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship.
But for Byrne that relegation has ended up being a great thing for his career. Under new head coach Paul Cook, he became a mainstay of the Latics side that became the champions and was tough to beat in defence as well as being a threat up front, using the experience from when he was an out-and-out winger to good effect. This form was noticed by plenty outside of Lancashire as well as he was named not only in the League One Team of the Season but also the EFL Team of the Season which included players currently competing in the Championship.
Byrne will hope to continue his good form for Wigan now that they are in the Championship.
