Sheffield United, Barnsley and Burton Albion in chase for Cambridge United midfielder

Sheffield United, Barnsley and Burton Albion are all interested in signing Cambridge United’s George Maris according to a report from The Sun.

Cambridge finished in a solid 12th place in Sky Bet League Two this season though they did threaten breaking into the play-offs at times. One of the reasons they performed well this season was the great form of Maris. He was brilliant from midfield this season, scoring 10 goals and being a threat as much up front as he was in midfield.

But with this sort of form you are bound to be noticed and that’s what happened. Both Barnsley and Burton were relegated on the final day of the season and are looking to rebuild their squads so they can return to the Sky Bet Championship at the first time of asking. But it is Sheffield United who will be the favourites to get his signature. They are still in the Championship and came close to getting into the play-offs. But if they want to make it into the top six this time they need to improve their squad and their head coach Chris Wilder has identified Maris as a potential target.

For Barnsley, this may be seen as embarrassing as they once had Maris on their books. He came through their academy but after several loan spells away from Oakwell, they would sell him to Cambridge. Now though he might be on his way back to the club if the Tykes beat Burton and the Blades to his signature.
